John Jay — Corner Office To Garage

A new venture is underway at Wieden and Kennedy, one that is said to break the barriers and expand the definition of what it means to be a creative firm. W+K Garage is the global agency’s new independent shop that will be lead by Global Co-executive Creative Director, John Jay (Vol. 03).

The exciting new venture was born from Dan (Wieden’s) simple question to John, ‘how can we get the most out of you?’. Stepping down from his corner office (where he has been managing W+K’s global work and opportunities), John Jay is heading back to the playing field with the intention of reinventing the game altogether.

“W+K Garage is a strategic and entrepreneurial shop that will conceptualise, create and invest in innovative products, experiences, content and technology that will help to redefine the idea of what a modern, global brand is”.

John explained, “Simply, I want to make things. Not to make meetings, but make in new ways. Make new products, digital and analogue. I want to make new businesses. I want to make new experiences – interactive or physical, in business and in culture.”

As the playing field continues to evolve, it is also time for the creative game plan to transform. John Jay and W+K have shown that now is time for newer and greater creative solutions.

Traditionally, water symbolizes life and renewal, but in Sierra Leone it is also a vehicle for epidemic and death — the focus of photographer Mustafah Abdulaziz’s project “Water Is Gold,” which documents the causes and effects of the country’s recent cholera outbreak.

Last year, Sierra Leone experienced the worst cholera outbreak in its history, Abdulaziz writes for the Pulitzer Center, which funded his trip. There were 20,736 cases of cholera with 280 deaths since the beginning of 2012, he adds.

Abdulaziz spent most of his time in and around Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital, which, he writes, was “built to support less than half the current population of 2 million.” The slums are overcrowded, unsanitary and sprawling — the perfect breeding ground for the disease.

Josh Wool spent a decade as an executive chef, opening restaurants across the south. But all that changed in 2010, when the carpal tunnel in his hands meant he could no longer work. To keep from going stir crazy, he picked up a camera and found his next calling. Two years, thousands of portraits, and a move to New York later, Wool is documenting the people who inspire him on a daily basis. Welcome to Creators of NYC.

Aakash Nihalani

Aakash Nihalani is at the forefront of the next generation of modern artists working in New York. His work in spray paint and tape can be found not only on the walls of private collectors but in and around the streets of New York. I met up with Aakash in his Williamsburg studio, where he was preparing for a solo show.

How do you describe your art?

It’s hard … I usually direct people to look up an image on their phone. But I think at the barest, the work is about perspective, playing with our idea of three-dimensional space within a two-dimensional plane using tape as my primary medium, often in urban environments.
